Athletic Coaches Spotlight

Michael Gainey

I am here to support our coaches and help provide for them the opportunity for our student-athletes to be successful.  We try to encourage a family atmosphere in which the coaches, athletes, administrators and fans work together to define what "Gryphon Pride" is all about.  It is my desire for Rocky Mount High School to be an example of everything that is good in high school athletics.  Our goal is for our student-athletes to compete successfully on the field and in the classroom.  It is our greatest hope that they will leave Rocky Mount High School with special memories as well as the tools necessary to be successful and contributing members of society.

Coach Michael Gainey is a native of Suffolk, Va.  He graduated of Ferrum Jr. College and East Carolina University.  Coach Gainey was a member of the ECU Pirate Football team from 1984-1986.

Coach Gainey joined the Nash-Rocky Mount School System in 1989 as a physical education teacher.  He was an assistant football coach for 10 years, served as 9th grade basketball coach from 1989-94, assistant basketball coach 1995-96, head JV basketball coach from 1996-97, and has served as the head varsity basketball coach sine 1997.  He became the Athletic Director for Rocky Mount High School in January 1999.

Coach Gainey is married to Pamela Gainey, a teacher at Edwards Middle School and head coach for RMHS varsity girls basketball team.  They have two children, Michael and Michelle.
