American Field Service (AFS)

Faculty Advisors:

Paisley Cloyd

Summary:

The goal of AFS is for the students to broaden their view in going to in a slightly different culture (Northern U.S. versus Southern U.S.).  Club participants actually travel to a northern state in a student exchange program.  Students will participate and experience new customs and traditions.  Students from the Northern school also travel to Rocky Mount to experience our Eastern North Carolina culture.   Students gain knowledge and dispel stereotypical images from the subcultures.  Long time friendships also develop between the students.  AFS helps prepare students for the college experience and adult life.  Students also participate in a variety of community service and fund raising activities.

Art Club

Faculty Advisors:

Paisley Cloyd
Matt Gibson
Genevieve Govoni

Summary:

The Art Club provides an opportunity for students interested in the Visual Arts to participate in activities related to using artistic skills in school activities and community service. We try to offer students exposure to the Arts outside of the regular school curriculum through guest presentations and museum trips. We participate in several service projects and events. The Art Club students offer pottery making, face painting, and crafts for children at the "Down East Festival" in Rocky Mount and the "Bloomin' Festival" in Nashville in conjunction with these two Art Associations. We paint faces for children at the hospital children's Xmas party. We have painted murals in public schools, lighted candles at "Stonewall" for the Xmas event and provided students to help at Barton College for the National Scholastic High School Art Competition.

Any high school student may join the club. The requirements are that you participate in at least one community service project during the course of the year and pay $5 club participation fee that helps fund our trip.

Quiz Bowl

Faculty Advisor

Paul Holloman

Summary:

I (Paul Holloman) am faculty advisor for the Quiz Bowl team.  We practice once a week where I ask them cleverly obfuscated questions about arcane, obscure and otherwise superfluous information which is currently taking up otherwise useful space in their brains.  We typically go to 2-3 competitions per year, including the Public Library Quiz Bowl, at which we compete with all the other high schools in the county (public and private).  If we win (and hopefully we will), then we may procede to the regional and perhaps even state levels of competition.  Anyone may join (though I can only take the eight best students to competition), and our first practice is usually about 3 or 4 weeks into the year.  Of course there are no intrinsic costs (dues, etc.) associated with participating, so anyone with an interest in the irrelevant and extraneous is welcome to come by at any time.
