Tar River Academy Graduates Start New Chapter

Nashville, NC – A total of 25 Tar River Academy (TRA) seniors started a new chapter in their lives on Friday, January 27, 2017 by becoming high school graduates. Members of the Winter Class of 2017 have various plans after TRA, as 10 will attend two year colleges, two will enlist in the military and 13 will enter the workforce. Dea'jah Zeldrique Baker was the class Valedictorian and Miguel Angel Antunez was the Salutatorian.

During the ceremony, Principal Hugh Scott gave the opening remarks and encouraged graduates to begin writing the next chapter in their life. “Your high school career may end tonight, but as I have shared with you before, this is only one chapter in your life story. It is time to turn the page and start the next part of your life,” Scott said. The ceremony was the first graduation for Scott as Principal of TRA. Baker, the class Valedictorian, reflected on her time at TRA. “It was tough, but I persevered. I am just so happy to have made it this far,” she stated. Baker also had a word of encouragement for her graduating class. “Continue on and start your next chapter by standing for what you believe in and following your dreams,” she said.

Superintendent Dr. Shelton Jefferies attended the ceremony to present diplomas and congratulate the graduating class. “I am very proud of these students. Their hard work, perseverance and dedication to finishing strong is evident. They undoubtedly have bright futures ahead of them and I am excited to see the next chapter of their lives unfold,” Dr. Jefferies stated.
