Computers are everywhere, changing every industry on the planet, but fewer than half of all schools teach computer science. Girls and minorities are severely underrepresented in computer science classes, and in the tech industry. Good news is, we’re on our way to change this.
With the Hour of Code, computer science has been on homepages of Google, MSN, Yahoo!, and Disney. Over 100 partners have joined together to support this movement. Every Apple Store in the world has hosted an Hour of Code.
That’s why every one of the 277 students at Swift Creek Elementary are joining in on the largest learning event in history: The Hour of Code, during Computer Science Education Week (December 4-10).
A shout out goes to Ms. Brown's, Ms. Vick's and Ms. Barclay's classes for become computer programmers!
We live in a world surrounded by technology. And we know that whatever field our students choose to go into as adults, their ability to succeed will increasingly depend on understanding how technology works. But only a tiny fraction of us are learning how technology works. Fewer than half of all schools teach computer science. That’s why our entire school is joining in on the largest learningevent in history: The Hour of Code, during Computer Science Education Week (December 4-10). More than 100 million students worldwide have already tried an Hour of Code.
Our Hour of Code is making a statement that Swift Creek is ready to teach these foundational 21st-century skills. To continue bringing programming activities to your students, we want to make our Hour of Code event huge. I encourage you to volunteer, reachout to local media, share the news on social media channels and consider hosting additional Hour of Codeevents in the community. This is a chance to change the future of education at Swift Creek Elementary! See http://hourofcode.com/us for details, and help spread theword.
Hi! I'm Natalie Brown. This is my twelfth year in education. I graduated from Appalachian State University twice, earning a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education and a Masters of Library Science. In 2011, I achieved my National Boards in Literacy: Reading-Language Arts/Early and Middle Childhood. I have since added an Instructional Technology Degree from East Carolina University.I was blessed to be able to attend Red Oak Elementary School when I was a child. It is so nice to be back home with an opportunity to teach in thesame community in which I was inspired to become a teacher. I love teaching because it gives me a chance to not only help to educate children but a chance to learn from their great young minds as well. I look forward to a great year.
Thanks to Mrs. Jones and Mrs. Price from the Harrison YMCA for organizing the creation of our new outdoor classroom. We had students, parents and staff from the Harrison YMCA work together to make this space amazing!
