An Evening of the Arts with Superintendent Dr. Jefferies

Nashville, NC –Nash-Rocky Mount Public Schools (NRMPS) held the annual Superintendent’s Art Gallery at Rocky Mount High School on Tuesday, May 22, 2018. The gallery collection consisted of 27 pieces of art created by students across the district.

The artistic contributions utilized a variety of mediums including crayon, colored pencil, watercolor, mixed media, paint and more. The Rocky Mount High School Strings Ensemble kicked off the event under the direction of Anna Jane Murray. Superintendent Dr. Shelton Jefferies observed the artwork on display and spoke to each student artist and school art teacher about their creation. A dance troupe from Nash Central High School, under the direction of Kelly Scott, served as the final performance of the night. The event concluded with a certificate presentation by superintendent Dr. Shelton Jefferies for all 27 student artists, as well as a group photo with the student artists, superintendent Dr. Jefferies and members of the NRMPS Board of Education.

Suzanne Weaver, NRMPS K-12 fine arts specialist and coordinator of the event, explained the purpose of the gallery. “The Superintendent's Art Gallery is a celebration to highlight the talent of our visual and performing arts students and the quality of instruction our teachers provide. Our students provided a written artist statement to accompany their work which allowed them to articulate their inspiration behind the artwork, the techniques used and the problem solving skills needed throughout the creative process.  Spectators were able to walk through the gallery, view the artwork and meet the artists and their teachers,” she stated.

Superintendent Dr. Jefferies was amazed at the level of talent represented across the district.  “I am honored to serve as the superintendent of each student who participated in this event. From the 27 amazing artists, elegant dancers and harmonic string ensemble.  Everyone involved, including the art teachers, did an outstanding job,” he said.
